Picture for 11.06.20

This picture does need to be cropped of the white spaces - computer is not handling GIMP well today, apparently, but it has been otherwise edited! With GIMP! I amaze myself.

Curves and Fuzzy Select are my new best friends when it comes to GIMP. Oh, and that gradient in the background? SOOC, it was darkest in the upper left, but is now darkest in the lower left, which looks much more natural. Go me. Not bad for a picture that was taken on my bed with a sheet of printed paper under the bracelets, right before I went to bed.... #toomuchtodoinlife

The sun was setting as I was driving, and I tried to get to a good vantage points, but I didn't get to one. I'd heard of this cemetery, so I thought I'd check it out... not a good vantage point, and by the time I got there the sunset colors were gone, anyway! I figured I'd go in anyway to find something to shoot, but once I got inside I discovered that the park technically closes at sunset, and it's illegal to be in there after then! Whoops... so I sat outside and took a couple shots of the gate. Good enough.

Also tried doing a shot where the focus was on the building in the background, but that just looked funny with a blurry gate in front...

I had a really hard time picking a picture for this day, but finally chose this one because I loved watching this person and his friends interact "with" the Washington Monument and its grounds. He and his friends were throwing the frisbee up the side for a while, sending it up close to, but without touching, the monument, and then he started shuffling it along the lights, watching the swaths of orange light that would pass as the frisbee moved along. 'Twas entertaining.

This picture is the result of pure laziness. Well, so I suppose it wasn't the best idea to try and take a macro-style picture with my new lens that isn't really meant for close-ups with out an understanding of how to do that, but still. I know me, and I know this was lazy, in the form of "Man, I just got home, I want to relax, I'm going to have to be social as soon as I go inside, so let's just get this picture-thing over with." Some days you just don't feel it, right?

Going for a faceless self-portrait, and was in a contemplative mood. I like the idea, but perhaps this would have been better if I were wearing pants?! Regardless of the lack of any scandalous visibility, I still feel like a self-voyeur looking at this...

Picture for 11.06.14: Fail.

Yet another "I'm just desperate to take a picture" picture, this time of my dinner. I originally took the picture in color, but with the reddish pink plate, the golden brown quesadilla and the yellow glare of the incandescent, it just wasn't rockin'. Back to the B&W! However, this picture was taken with my brand new (to me) lens: Canon EF 28-135mm IS USM, so I'm pretty excited! Off the kit lens and on to something better!

Looking back at the picture for 11.06.11 I can now understand why photographers talk about the necessity of color calibration for working computers. On my laptop I despaired of my flowers ever looking as purple as they really were, instead of this weaker lavender blue, but then pulling up that post on my work computer shows an intensity of purple color. Of course, I don't really need to worry about color calibration for what I'm doing these days, but it's good to keep in mind for the future, should this hobby actually go anywhere.

It was surprisingly hard to get a good picture of this necklace, especially with the translucent red strand. Finally managed to get a couple shots that were pretty true to the colors, but man alive...

Picture of the National Cathedral - It's difficult to get a good shot from the ground of this place! I wonder if I can get permission to take pictures from the top of the apartment buildings across the street...

So many of my pictures are turning out to be more of a "I'm desperate to take a picture of SOMETHING today in order to fulfill my requirement." Case in point, this is a flower in the backyard. At least it's pretty? Unfortunately, that purple color was just difficult to capture...

On the bright side, if I can keep this motivation up of taking pictures everyday no matter what, perhaps eventually I'll be more intentional about deliberately seeking out picture opportunities, instead of waiting for the "Oh, crap..." moments.

Didn't I say something about picture-taking-each-day being mandatory? So, yeah.... oops.

Because I didn't take any pictures earlier (y'know, that whole work thing), and I needed to take a picture of something. What better than my companion of the last couple hours?

Because it was a beautiful set-up, and granted a moment's of peace. Is actually in a chapel that was made out of a former open hall-space, if you will, after the real chapel tragically burned. After taking this picture I proceeded to play the piano for the first time in a year, which made me quite happy.

Driving a couple hours outside of town to visit a friend, I saw so many spectacular views that I wanted to pull over constantly. However, time constraints limited me to a few shaky shots out the window, and afforded me little opportunity to make sure the color was correct. This (post-edit) is one of the closest.

Because even if the picture is really taken 2am on the next day, it still feels like one day, and so I"m using this for June 2nd.

Really trying to stick to my guns about this picture everyday concept, so this my dresser. Never got the focus quite right - here it's too particular, in others everything was sharp. Hmm.

Because I was at risking of another photo-a-day-fail, but it's really hard to take a picture at my work or in a theatre production or other places where you aren't really allowed to take pictures, or at least shoudn't be making those public. Pictures of friends online? Perhaps. Pictures of clients? Not so much.

Not that I recommend taking pictures while driving: it's not easy, it's distracting from the road, and the focus probably won't land where you want it to anyway.

This picture would work really well if I were doing a color series, and the color of the day was green.

However, I'm really using it because all my other pictures on that day were of people. People I know, and who have not been approached about being published online. Still need to work out how I feel on that. Of course, I'd never include someone's full name, address and social security with their picture, but is it a violation of trust to post it publically somewhere other than Facebook where they will likely never know it's out there?
